AirTouch-style blonding in Amsterdam

Clients often ask for AirTouch when what they are really describing is a particular result: finely blended lightness, a soft transition at the root and colour that grows out without a hard line.

The original AirTouch method uses airflow from a blow-dryer to separate shorter hairs before the selected strands are lightened in foils.

Aram works differently. He separates the hair manually, choosing the strands by hand rather than letting airflow determine the selection. The aim is the same kind of soft, diffused and low-maintenance finish, but the method is his own.

Hand-separated blonding starts at €220. The studio is on Geelvinckssteeg in central Amsterdam and welcomes one client at a time, by appointment only.

What the original AirTouch technique is

The original AirTouch technique separates shorter and internal hairs from a section using cool airflow from a blow-dryer. Colour or lightener is then applied to the selected longer strands, generally in foils.

This creates a fine transition between the natural base and the lighter lengths. Because the colour does not begin as one solid line at the root, the grow-out appears softer than with traditional uniform highlights.

AirTouch is not the same as balayage and it is not a freehand technique.

How Aram creates the result

Aram does not use airflow to decide which hairs remain in the section. He separates them manually.

Working by hand allows him to make deliberate choices around the hairline, parting, previous colour, density and areas of different growth. The placement is adjusted to the individual head of hair rather than repeated as one fixed pattern.

This should be described as hand-separated blonding or an AirTouch-style result — not as the original AirTouch method.

AirTouch, balayage and Aram’s method

Original AirTouch

Uses airflow from a blow-dryer to separate shorter and internal hairs. The selected strands are normally lightened in foils, creating a very fine and diffused transition.

Balayage

Balayage colour is painted freehand onto the surface of the hair. It usually creates a more visible, sunlit contrast and remains softer at the root than traditional highlights.

Aram’s hand-separated method

The strands are selected manually before lightening. This gives Aram direct control over the placement and allows the colour plan to follow the hair’s density, growth pattern and previous colour.

Who this approach may suit

This approach is designed for clients who want finely blended lightness without a strong line at the root.

It works particularly well on medium-length and long hair, where there is enough length to create a gradual transition. It can also be useful when working around previous colour, although the existing colour history and condition of the hair must be assessed first.

Dark hair can be lightened with this approach, but reaching a cool blonde may require more than one appointment. The safe result depends on the starting colour, previous treatments and condition of the hair. Where the hair carries several layers of earlier colour, this becomes colour correction.

Price and appointment time

Hand-separated blonding starts at €220 and ranges up to €300 depending on the length, density, previous colour and amount of lightening required.

The lightening appointment usually takes approximately two and a half to three hours. If toner is required, allow approximately one additional hour. Toner is priced separately, from €110.

The expected result, time and full price are agreed during the consultation before any colour is mixed.

Between appointments

Because the colour begins with a soft transition rather than a solid line at the root, most clients do not need to return on a four-week schedule.

The exact maintenance interval depends on the contrast between the natural base and the lighter lengths. Toner normally fades before the lightened colour itself, so a shorter toner appointment may be enough when the blonde begins to look warmer.

Common questions

Do you offer the original AirTouch technique?

No. The original AirTouch method uses airflow from a blow-dryer to separate the hair. Aram separates the strands manually and creates an AirTouch-style, diffused colour result using his own placement method.

Is AirTouch the same as balayage?

No. Original AirTouch uses airflow and normally foils. Balayage is painted freehand onto the surface of the hair. Aram’s method uses manual strand separation before lightening.

Why does Aram separate the hair manually?

Manual separation allows him to decide exactly which strands to lighten according to the density, growth pattern, hairline and previous colour.

How much does AirTouch-style blonding cost in Amsterdam?

At this studio, hand-separated blonding starts at €220 and ranges up to €300. Toner is separate, from €110. The exact price is agreed during the consultation.

How long does the appointment take?

Usually two and a half to three hours for the lightening, or approximately one hour longer if toner is included.

Can it be done on previously coloured or dark hair?

Often, yes, but the possible result depends on what is already on the hair and its current condition. Dark or repeatedly coloured hair may need more than one appointment.

Where is the studio?
