Highlights in Amsterdam

Highlights create brighter, more even lightness using foil placement. They can be worked closer to the root than freehand balayage. The placement is chosen around your natural base, density, condition, previous colour and the result you want.

Aram Manoukian brings 25+ years of professional hairdressing experience to blonde and hair colour work. At Aram Manoukian Hair Studio in central Amsterdam, he works with one client at a time, from consultation to finish.

Highlights currently cost €200–€290, with a booking slot of 2 h 30 min. Toner is separate.

What highlights actually are

Selected sections of hair are lightened in foils rather than painted freehand. Foil placement gives control over where the brightness starts and how it is distributed through the hair.

The appointment starts with assessing the hair and discussing the intended result. The placement and amount of lightening follow that assessment; the condition of the hair comes first.

Highlights vs balayage

Highlights create brighter, more even overall lightness, with greater control close to the root. As the hair grows, the regrowth line can be more visible.

Balayage is painted freehand for a softer root and a more gradual grow-out. The choice depends on how you want the lightness to sit, as well as your starting hair.

Highlights vs AirTouch-style blonding

Highlights offer more structured brightness and control over root placement. AirTouch-style blonding creates a softer, diffused root transition. Aram considers the desired result and your hair before recommending an approach.

Choosing the right blonde approach

A reference image helps explain the result you like, but it does not determine the technique. Natural base, density, condition and previous colour can mean highlights, balayage, AirTouch-style blonding, toner or colour correction is more appropriate.

Previously coloured or dark hair

Natural dark hair and previously coloured dark hair behave differently when lightened. Box dye, old highlights and repeated colour can lift unevenly, so your colour history matters as much as the reference photo.

Some changes need more than one session. If previous colour needs to be corrected first, colour correction may be the right starting point. If the hair is fragile or has been heavily lightened recently, Aram may recommend doing less, working in stages or waiting.

Toner

Toner may be used after lightening to refine the final tone. It is not automatically required in every situation: the decision depends on how the hair looks after it has lifted.

Toner currently costs €110–€180 and is priced separately from Highlights.
